Choosing a bed for your horse can become a little baffling at times with the huge array of different types of bedding now available on the market. But although personal preference can be the main factor in the final choice, here are a few essential factors that your horses’ bedding should offer:
- High absorbency
- Low odour
- Economical to use
- Labour saving
- Easy to dispose of
- Convenient to handle
- Environmentally friendly
Hemp Technology offers a choice of three different types of bedding made from different products but using the same manufacturing process to ensure that all three are very soft and absorbent for a comfortable bed for your horse or pony.
Hemcore is made from the soft, inner core of the hemp plant stem that is grown and processed entirely in the UK. It is not bleached and no chemicals are added at any stage of its growth. It is capable of absorbing far more moisture than either straw or wood shavings, resulting in a bed that stays drier for longer and is very easy to muck out, plus less product is used, making it an economical choice in the long run.
Rapport is made from the straw of the oilseed rape plant which is graded and softened on the hemp processing line, which makes it very different to all other brands of rape straw bedding. The specialised hemp equipment really opens up and softens the straw making Rapport much more absorbent and comfortable. It also makes a great bedding for poultry as well as horses, and is priced very competitively.
Flaxcore is made from the straw of the Flax plant. The straw is processed with the same efficient machinery as both Hemcore and Rapport which means thorough dust extraction. Flax is a bast fibre like Hemp, this is where fibre is on the outside of the stem. The stem of the Flax plant is much finer than that of Hemp, thus giving a smaller particle size than Hemp. The fibre is separated from the woody inner core after the processing cycle takes place in our £4.1m decortication factory in Suffolk. As with Hemp the fibre is sold into the paper, automotive and insulation industry’s creating a very ecological product. Flaxcore is a brilliant, very low cost alternative to Hemcore and Rapport.
All three beddings are finely processed, fully dust extracted and packed into heat-sealed, recyclable polythene bags which can be stored inside or out. Hemcore and Rapport contain citronella which generally improves the stable environment and they rot down quickly into excellent composts.
